When should I use Hydro-BOOM!?
Hydro-BOOM! can be used before, during and after exercise. Drink Hydro-BOOM! before exercise to ‘top off’ hydration and carbohydrate levels, during exercise to help prevent dehydration and delay fatigue and after exercise to aid in the recovery and rehydration process
Can I consume Hydro-BOOM! Electrolyte 5 Sports Drink and Carb-BOOM! energy gels together during training/competition?
Absolutely. A good rule of thumb is to shoot for consuming 60-70 grams of total carbohydrates per hour of exercise. This level (60-70 grams/hr) is the maximal rate at which the body can oxidize carbohydrates. One packet of Carb-BOOM! energy gel provides 26-27g of carbohydrate, while 20 ounces of Hydro-BOOM! provides about 40g. So, consuming one packet of Carb-BOOM! and one 20 oz water bottle of Hydro-BOOM! per hour of exercise will give you 66-67g of total carbohydrates. Note: If you are a heavy sweater, drink water to cover the remaining suggested balance of fluid intake (in this case, 20 ounces/hour).
What is the % of carbohydrate concentration in Hydro-BOOM! and why is it important?
Hydro-BOOM! contains a 7% carbohydrate solution. The ideal carbohydrate concentration for sport drinks is between 6-8%. A 6-8% solution is optimal for gastric emptying, intestinal absorption and adequate carbohydrate delivery. Drinks containing less than 6% may not provide enough carbohydrate to exercising muscles while drinks containing a high carbohydrate solution (>8%) can delay gastric emptying and absorption.
What types of carbohydrates are present in Hydro-BOOM!?
Hydro-BOOM! contains a blend of complex carbohydrates and simple sugars. Maltodextrin, a complex carbohydrate, is the primary type present. Sucrose, glucose and fructose make up the remaining balance. The first three mentioned, maltodextrin, glucose and sucrose, are all quickly oxidized by the body, providing a fast acting fuel source to working muscles. Fructose is more slowly oxidized, but is important to include due to its role in liver glycogen replenishment.
Sport drinks that contain a variety of carbohydrates are advantageous over drinks using only one type – a blend of carbohydrates optimizes oxidation, absorption, glycogen restoration, osmolality and taste.
Why is taste so important in a sports drink?
In general, athletes do not do a good job of replacing fluids lost through sweating, putting them at risk for dehydration. Dehydration, along with depleted carbohydrate stores are the two biggest culprits for causing fatigue and reduced performance during exercise. Taste is therefore extremely critical to a sports drink. A beverage that doesn’t taste good fails the athlete at the first hurdle by further reducing voluntary consumption and putting them on a fast-track to hydration troubles.

What is the osmolality of Hydro-BOOM!?Hydro-BOOM! has an osmolality of 243 mOsm/kg (slightly hypotonic). For comparison, the typical osmolality of blood ranges from 250-300 mOsm/kg. Osmolality is a scale that describes the concentration of dissolved particles in solution. In relation to sport drinks, the osmolality of an ingested beverage is either hypotonic (less concentrated), isotonic (equally concentrated) or hypertonic (more concentrated) than the osmolality of blood. Hypotonic and isotonic beverages are ideal for exercise as they help keep gastric emptying rates at optimal levels, whereas hypertonic beverages can delay stomach emptying-- slowing absorption and sometimes resulting in GI (gastrointestinal) problems for athletes.
