NATURAL KILLER CELLS SLAY FATIGUE

Fatigue is one of the most common health complaints with symptoms that are hard to define and resistant to treatment. Up to 20% of adults report fatigue so severe that it impairs work and home life. Research that looks at the interaction of the body’s immune system with the endocrine and nervous systems, and the role of white blood cells called Natural Killer (NK) cells, offers new hope.
Natural Killer (NK) cells are a type of white blood cell that earn their name because they have a “natural,” meaning innate, ability to identify and kill any “non-self cells” (the microscopic invaders or abnormal cells that mean us harm). NK cells patrol your tissues and blood stream on the look out for “non-self cells.” When they find them, they very often nip them in the bud before they have a chance to take root and cause problems.
They also help regulate overall immune response. When you are healthy, NK cells by themselves can handle any invaders and they send a signal to the rest of the body that “all is well,” which down regulates other aspects of immune function allowing these to be rested, ready and better able to respond to the next immune challenge.
When NK cells are overwhelmed, they “sound the alarm” by initiating a cascade of cytokines (immune system messenger compounds) that recruit other white blood cells to the scene. They signal the endocrine system to produce hormones that alter body temperature and metabolism to fight disease, and signal the nervous system and brain altering behavior, to seek rest and recovery.
NK cell function fluctuates throughout our lives. It generally declines with age and in response to physical stress (such as injury and exposure to toxins) and psychological stress 9like grief, or home and work pressures). When NK cell function is low, susceptibility to infection increases, so “flu-like” symptoms are more common. Also when NK cell function in low the “all clear” signal they send is weak, so illness related immune, endocrine and nervous system activity is higher than it should be, producing many fatigue symptoms.
Research shows that measure can be taken to support higher NK cell function that can help improve or eliminate fatigue symptoms.
