Wart: A hard, rough lump that grows on the skin and is caused by infection with certain viruses
Technically known as verruca vulgaris, warts occur most often on the face, hands, arms, legs and feet, but can grow anywhere on your body. Contrary to popular belief, warts do not have "roots". Instead, they grow only in the top layer of skin, the epidermis. When they grow down, they displace the second layer of skin, the dermis, but do not grow into it.
There are at least six types of warts, named by their appearance or location on the body:- Common Warts occur most commonly on the hands. They are rough and gray in color.

Causes of warts
Warts are a type of infection caused by the human papillomavirus virus (HPV). The virus infects the outer layer of skin and causes the skin cells to grow quickly. The virus can then spread from one wart to other parts of the body, resulting in more warts. There are at least 60 types of HPVs. Some tend to cause warts on the skin, while others cause warts on the genitals or rectum.
Warts are spread by direct contact. When warts on the skin are touched, they may be passed may be passed on to the person who touched them. It is also possible to get warts from using towels or other objects that were used by a person who has warts.
Symptoms of warts- Warts come in all shapes and sizes. They can occur as single warts or cauliflower-like groupings.
