RESEARCH DATA
When blood stagnation is the dominant feature, the recommended prescriptions are Bupleurum and Peony Formula with carthamus and salvia added, or Astragalus and Red Peony Combination. These formulas lack the kidney warming herbs. In cases where qi deficiency is considered the major underlying cause, modifications of Ginseng and Astragalus Combination are suggested.1

Carthamus is mainly used to invigorate blood circulation; it can also nourish blood when used in small doses. It is commonly used today to improve cardiovascular circulation and to treat and prevent local blood clotting, as occurs with angina pectoris.2

* From this we can see that Hong Hua is defined as a Blood Regulating herb which Invigorates Blood circulation”, “Breaks up Blood Stagnation” and in other words has the specific Energetic properties that we need to deal with a Blood Stagnation condition in the body. We can also note that Hong Hua is congruently recognized as a “vasodilator for coronary arteries, hypotensive”, “reduces platelet aggregation” and is an “anti-spasmodic, emmenagogue” under its Western Properties.3
