RESEARCH DATA

UVA: Long-wave solar rays of 320-400 nm. Penetrates the skin more deeply (into the Dermis, 2nd layer of skin). Causes photoaging, actinic damage (wrinkled, leathery, variously pigmented skin), and skin cancers including melanomas. Same strength year-round.

UVB: Short-Wave solar rays of 290-320 nm. Penetrates only the epidermis, causes sunburn and considered to be the main cause of basal and squamous cell carcinomas, as well as a significant factor in melanomas. Different strengths depending on Sun's location, and can be lessened to deflected by clouds.

UVC: Reflected by the Ozone layer, does not reach the Earth.

Critical Wavelength: an international rating system for UVA protection. The point at which the sunscreen allows 10% of the rays to penetrate is defined as Critical Wavelength. A sunscreen with a critical wavelength over 370nm is considered by the FDA to provide excellent UVA protection. Badger SPF30 Sunscreen has a critical wavelength of 377nm and Badger SPF15 Sunscreen has a critical wavelength of 376nm.

SUGGESTED USAGE
It is ideal to select a sunscreen that blocks enough UV rays to adequately protect your skin type. In the mean time, don’t forget that our bodies need natural sunlight to synthesize adequate amounts of vitamin D in order to keep our bones strong and healthy, as well as support the immune system. Use the Sun Survival Guide below to help determine your skin type and appropriate SPF.

Sun Survival Guide - Choosing the Right SPF For Your Skin Type:

 Skin Complextion
Sun's Effect on the Skin
  Recommended SPF
Very Fair   Always burns easily; never tans   30-50+
Fair   Always burns easily; tans minimally   30-50+
Light   Burns moderately; tans eventually   15-30
Medium   Burns minimally; always tans well   6-15
Dark   Rarely burns; tans readily   2-10
Very Dark   Never burns; becomes deeply pigmented   2-10

Remember to take care of your skin in the sun with these sun facts:

  • Avoid sun exposure during the peak hours between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. You can cut down on the overall exposure received by spending intermittent periods of time in the shade.

  • The sun's rays are more intense in tropical and semi-tropical locations because exposure becomes more direct as you get closer to the equator. Intensity is also increased in higher elevations where the atmosphere is thinner. Extra protection for skin and eyes is necessary in both cases. Choose a higher SPF in these geographical locations.

  • The continuing depletion of the ozone layer results in increased exposure to UV rays. Surfaces such as water, sand, snow, and pavement all reflect and intensify exposure. Because of this you can still get burned even when wearing a hat or sitting in the shade.

  • Wear sunscreen even on cloudy or hazy days. UV rays can penetrate these atmospheric conditions and cause sunburn.

  • UVB rays are stronger in the summer. Choose a higher SPF during those months. UVA remains more or less constant throughout the year.

  • Many medications, including certain antibiotics, heart and blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and antidepressants, can cause photosensitive reactions when the user is exposed to sunlight. This can result in an unusual "sunburn", or a rash or other allergic-type reaction to the skin. Individual sensitivities vary widely and may not happen to every user, every time. Consult your physician or pharmacist before sun exposure when using ANY medication.

  • Some fragrances can also cause photosensitive reactions wherever they are applied to the skin. Examples of these are bergamot, citron, lavender, sandalwood, and musk.

  • UVB rays are stronger in the summer. Choose a higher SPF during those months. UVA remains more or less constant throughout the year.

    FAQ

Does the Badger SPF contain PABA?
No, the active ingredient in our SPF products is micronized Zinc Oxide which is very gentle and non-irritating.

What is the expiration date for the SPF 15 and SPF 30 Sunblock?
These products are good for one year from the date they are manufactured, which is printed on the tube. After that they may not protect effectively from the sun and you should dispose of the old tube and replace it.

    Why Badger SPF?
Badger Sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays - a good way to help protect your family’s skin from harmful rays that cause skin cancer, 90% of which are caused by sun exposure.

They don’t contain many of the common sunscreen ingredients that are suspected or known carcinogens and/or hormone distruptors, such as diethanolamine, triethanolamine (DEA, TEA), padimate-o, octyl dimethyl PABA, benzophenone, oxybenzone, homosalate, octyl-methoxycinnamate (oxtinoxate), salicylates, and parabens. Many of these chemicals also have other properties, such as benzophenone, which appears to be a free radical generator, or TEA, which can combine with nitrate (used as a preservative or present as an environmental contaminant) to cause formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines. And nitrates are not always disclosed on cosmetic labels.

Badger contains only ingredients that you (and we) can pronounce.

With the exception of the coating on our Zinc Oxide, all of our ingredients are all-natural, mostly organic and wild-crafted when possible. We spend a lot of time making sure that each and every ingredient is processed without chemicals and we look for fair trade products whenever possible. We understand that no sunscreen can offer complete protection, and that there are questions about the safety about “micronized” zinc products.

What are SPF, UVA and UVB, anyway?
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measurement of how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn and some skin cancers. If your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, for example, wearing an SPF 15 sunscreen would allow you to stay in the sun for approximately 150 minutes (15 times longer than if you hadn't applied sunscreen) without burning. This is a rough estimate, however, and may give you more or less safety depending on your skin, the intensity of sunlight, and the type of activity you are doing in the sun. SPF ratings are also confusing - the scale is not linear: SPF 30 doesn't prevent burns twice as long as SPF 15, and actually only blocks 5% more UVB radiation than SPF 15 (according to the EPA and American Association of Dermatology). Most experts do recommend an SPF rating of at least 15, and applying sunscreen generously and frequently for the best protection.

The SPF rating only tells you only about UVB protection, but nothing about protection from harmful UVA rays. The sunlight that strikes your skin is composed of both UVB and UVA radiation. UVA is the wavelength of sunlight that penetrates deeper into the skin without causing surface burning, but instead has the potential to release free radicals and cause skin melanomas, photoaging and more. You should always choose sun protection that is "broad spectrum" which means it blocks both UVB and UVA wavelengths. Badger SPF sunscreens are broad spectrum: strong enough to prevent burning for a reasonable length of time with the power to block UVA radiation -- something that many higher SPF products cannot match! This is due to our unique combination of Zinc Oxide, with naturally protective oils and butters like Shea, Cocoa, Jojoba and Extra Virgin Olive. We've also added Seabuckthorn Berry Extract, a natural cell restorative. And Natural means this is the right stuff for safely and effectively protecting you and your family from the damaging rays of the sun.

What is the difference between “Physical Barrier” and “Chemical” Sunscreens?
Physical Barrier Sunscreens form a film on top of the skin that reflects or scatters UV light. UV light is divided into three wavelength bands – UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA and UVB are the two that reach the earth and Physical Barrier sunscreens are effective at blocking both. Most physical barrier sunscreens contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which have been used for many years and are minerals.

Zinc Oxide is a mineral that provides UVB/UVA protection, has anti-inflammatory properties and is considered a safe sunscreen ingredient. The regular form of zinc oxide leaves a strong white residue on the skin, while micronized zinc oxide creates the same barrier in a clear color instead.

Chemical Sunscreens absorb UV rays before they can do any damage. Usually, the ingredients protect against either UVA or UVB, so for broad-spectrum protection, you would need to choose a chemical sunscreen containing more than one active ingredient, most often two or three. Chemical sunscreens can be absorbed into the skin, are more likely to cause irritation or allergy, and can degrade over time (at a year old, they tend to be less effective).

Do Badger sunblocks contain nanoparticles that can be absorbed into the skin and cause damage?
The short answer is that our sunscreens contain micronized zinc oxide, which uses micro particle technology, which can be measured in nanometers and microns. Based on the studies we have seen (from multiple sources), history, and the information available, we do not believe that micronized zinc oxide is absorbed into the skin, but instead sits on the top layer, offering board-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, our micronized zinc is a larger size than in many of the other products on the market, and is considered to be larger than what is classified as the “nanoparticle” you hear about in the news.

What is the shelf life of an unopened tin of Badger?
An unopened tin of Badger stored at moderate temperatures should be good for two to three years. If you open it and it smells good, it is good. Extremes in temperature and humidity will affect shelf life, so it is not possible to give an exact expiration date. The date of manufacture is imprinted on the side of the tin to give you a reference point.

How long will an opened tin last?
As soon as you open a tin of any product and stick your fingers in, the life span varies; again it depends on storage temperature and humidity as well as how clean the fingers are that scoop out the product. Essential oils will slowly but surely evaporate from an open tin; that’s the pleasant fragrance you smell when you open one. You can expect your opened balm to stay good for 1-2 years.

How can I make sure my Badger stays fresh?
Keep it covered when not in use. Keep your product out of direct sun when possible. Refrigeration is not necessary, but it will certainly prolong the life of a product.

The balm in my tin of Badger looks different this time than the last time I bought it. Why?
Because Badger uses only natural ingredients, the ingredients are never exactly the same from one batch to another. Normal variance in sunshine, rain, or temperature from year to year or country harvested can all subtly affect natural ingredients. One year’s pressing of organic extra virgin olive oil may be greener in color than another’s or you may experience a stronger or subtler scent with an essential oil. These are all normal and to be expected with natural ingredients.

I'm pregnant, are your products safe for me?
Pregnant or nursing moms should always check with their doctors. Badger uses only the highest quality natural ingredients. No chemicals or chemical derivatives are used, and the essential oils used are in low percentages, therefore moderate use should be safe for all. As with all new products, it is best to do a Skin Patch Test* to test for possible allergic reactions.

Can I use your products on my children?
Sure. We have received feedback from Moms, Dads and Grandparents that Badger Healing Balm and Baby Balm are safe and effective when used on even the littlest Badger’s skin irritations, cradle cap and diaper rash. Many people also use our Anti-Bug Balm, Sleep Balm and Bali Balm as natural alternatives for their children. As with all new products it is best to do a Skin Patch Test* prior to full usage to test for any skin allergies and if you have any questions please check with your doctor.

My dog, cat, lizard ate my tin of Badger, will he/she be OK?
All the ingredients contained in Badger products are natural and in most cases if consumed by a pet will not be harmful. It never hurts to check with your vet since different animals have different sensitivities to essential oils.

Is it ok to use Badger on my cat?
No, it is not okay to use any product containing essential oils on a cat. They cannot process essential oils in the same way that dogs or humans do and it may make them sick.

    Do you do animal testing?
Nope. W.S. Badger conducts absolutely no product testing on animals, as all the ingredients are safe and “food grade” when used in the proper amounts. (Essential Oils are always properly diluted.) We test all prototype products on families, friends, volunteers and ourselves. It’s fun. If the new product does not pass our tough standards it does not make it to the marketplace. We have also gone through the process of getting certified by Leaping Bunny which means that not only do we not test our products on animals, but we have confirmed that none of our suppliers test their ingredients on animals either.

Do Badger products contain any animal ingredients? Do you use oil made from badgers in your products?
No, our products do not contain any animal ingredients and this includes badger oil. Most of our products do contain beeswax, which is produced by bees.

Do Badger formulas contain any chemical ingredients?
Absolutely not! Read our labels and you will not see any of the following: petroleum derived products, sodium lauryl sulfate, chemical additives, chemical preservatives, synthetics, dyes or fragrances, parabens, or carcinogens. We are committed to being chemical-free and 100% natural. And to top it off we also use at least 70% Certified Organic ingredients in all our products.

What happens if one of my Badger products freezes or melts? Can I still use it?
Absolutely. You may find that the consistency will change a little. Sometimes the product becomes much softer and creamier if it freezes and then thaws, but it is still absolutely fine to use.

Do Badger products contain antioxidants, particularly vitamin E?
Yes, Badger products have antioxidants and vitamin E, which is naturally occurring in the oils, butters, waxes, and extracts we use to formulate our powerfully pure products. We never add synthetic or laboratory produced anti-oxidants or other vitamins; we believe that the best place to get these is from the plants they naturally occur in.

What is Castor Oil and where does it come from?
It is a soothing and emollient, cold-pressed oil extracted from Castor “Beans.” The Castor plant is a lovely semi-tropical shrub or tree whose common name is “Palma Christi.” By the way, Castor Beans are poisonous, but Castor Oil is not. The toxic part of the bean is water-soluble and is not present in the oil.

What makes Extra Virgin Olive Oil Extra “Virgin”?
It is a “First cold-pressed” oil of olive that has been pressed while the olive fruit is still fresh, resulting in a low-acidity oil (this is what qualifies it as “extra virgin”) that is a lovely greenish color, fragrant, flavorful and nutritious, and when applied topically, very soothing and healing for your skin.
