FAQ
Q:Where did your company name come from?
A: Well, Phil and I are word nerds of a sort, and we happen to have senses of humor. The proper term, of course, is "out-of-body experience", but we make skincare products that are applied to your outer body. Thus, the amusing company name. It seems the two names are easily confused, but trust me, our name is a play on words, not misuse of a term. Just do a search on the two versions of our name and you'll see why they are becoming intertwined. So, for those folks who like to publish their stories of leaving their bodies and joining the celestial world, please note that you had an out-of-body experience, and you'll need an Outer Body Experience to clean yourself up!

Q:Do you sell wholesale and/or provide private-label services?
A: Yes! Please visit our wholesale page to learn more. We can certainly meet your private label needs for natural soaps. Please visit our wholesale page and provide the information requested, and we will contact you.

Q:Where can I find your products?
A: Please visit our locations page to see all of the wonderful stores that carry our products. Some stores that have our products may not be listed, as we are continually updating our list. Let us know which health food or gift store you like to shop at, and we'll do our best to get our products in that store. Better yet, put in the good word for us. Customer demand is the best way to get our foot in the door!

Q: Can I use this soap on my face?
A: Definitely! Just as it is moisturizing for the body, our soap is moisturizing and cleansing for the face. For exfoliation, try Oats and Honey. For acne, try Mint. Mature or dry skin benefits from the oils in Rose. Sensitive skin will love Calendula, Chamomile, or Lavender. Or, try another one and see how you like it!

Q:Your soap packaging reads "for body, face, and hair." Can I really wash my hair with your soap?
A: It's primarily what we use to clean our hair. Our soaps will clean and nourish your hair and scalp. Unlike liquid shampoos that contain detergents, our soaps are veggie based and very gentle. Less packaging and waste, too!

Q:Which soap is the most moisturizing?
A: All of our soaps contain moisturizing vegetable oils and added moisturizers like shea butter or avocado oil. The natural glycerin (found in all of our soaps) combined with the moisturizing veggie oils are what separate our soaps from drying, detergent-based commercial soaps. The essential oils in our soaps can create either a moisturizing or slightly astringent feel. Rose, Lavender, and Oats and Honey are the most moisturizing due to the Qualities of the essential oils and herbs in them. Mint and Citrus are slightly astringent because of the essential oils, but they are not drying.

Q:Is your soap good for dry skin?
A: Yes! As mentioned above, our soaps are made with moisturizing veggie oils and added moisturizers. Our favorite moisturizer is shea butter, which is found in most of our soaps. Our soaps also contain glycerin, which is produced as a by-product of the soapmaking process. Unlike the commercial soaps, we do not "squeeze" out the glycerin. It stays where it is, to benefit your skin.

Q:Will your soap last a long time?
A: Yes, as long as you treat it right. Our soaps last extremely long if used as a hand soap, and expect two to four weeks of use in the shower depending on the number of users. Soap should be placed on a soap dish or shower caddy that allows for drainage and air circulation. The soap should dry out completely between uses. All soaps will disintegrate if left in a puddle of water after a bath or shower. To make your soap last, we recommend using our handcrafted pine soap dishes, listed on the gifts page.

Q:What is shea butter?
A: Shea butter is a thick, moisturizing butter extracted from the pit of the fruit from the karite tree (Butyrospermum parkii) found in West and Central Africa. Similar to cocoa butter in consistency, shea butter is a wonderful emollient that can be used straight on the skin to help heal cracked and damaged skin. Shea butter has been traditionally used by African natives to heal small wounds, burns and skin ulcers, and as a moisturizer for the skin and hair. They even cook with it. It contains fatty acids, phytosterol and unsaponifiables which stimulate the skin's renewal process, providing a more youthful, vibrant appearance. It's texture is typically soft and butter-like so it melts readily into the skin. Shea Butter is thought to increase local capillary circulation which in turn increases tissue re-oxygenation. Shea butter may also offer some amount of SPF protection. With our arid Colorado climate, shea butter is a juggernaut of moisturizing power. We use shea butter in most of our soaps as an added moisturizer, and our customers tell us that it makes their skin feel silky smooth and soft.

Q:What does "saponified" mean?
A: Saponification is the process of making soap. It is the combination of an alkali with fat to create soap. Early soapmakers used animal fats, such as tallow. Our soaps are all vegetable-based using olive, coconut and palm oils, and no animal fats are ever used. Check the label of other soaps on the shelf, and you may see words such as "sodium tallowate" or "sodium cocoate." Put simply, this means that sodium hydroxide, water, and animal tallow were used to create the soap (sodium tallowate), or coconut oil was used (sodium cocoate). Sodium palmate is another description, meaning palm oil was used as the fat source. Tallow is used quite frequently in commercial bars, as it is cheap and plentiful. Vegetarians may be surprised to learn that the "sodium tallowate" they are rubbing on their bodies is from an animal source. Vegetable oils are much easier to work with and in combination, create a rich lather that is as good or better than tallow-based soaps. It may cost more to use all vegetable oils in our bars, but the results far outweigh the costs.

Q:What is aromatherapy?
A: An essential oil is the concentrated essence of a plant. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils via inhalation and application to restore or enhance health, beauty and well-being. Aromatherapy cannot fix a broken bone, but essential oils can do many wonderful things to enhance your body, environment, and state of mind. I use aromatherapy blends in my products in order to create certain experiences. My Lavender blend can help create a tranquil, calming feeling, while the Mint, Citrus, or Lemon Verbena blends are designed to awaken and revive your mind and body. There are many good books and even study courses for learning about aromatherapy. If you choose to use essential oils for personal use, be sure to learn the proper handling of essential oils. Always research the uses and warnings about any essential oil before using it, and dilute in a carrier oil before applying to the skin.
Beware of any product that uses the words "aromatherapy" or "natural." Many of these products use synthetic fragrances that mimic the smell of the essential oil, but they in no way duplicate the therapeutic effect. Because there is little regulation on the use of these words by the FDA, it is easy to create a product with little or no essential oil or herbal extract but loaded with chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Read the label and learn the difference between good and bad ingredients.
