The bark of the white willow tree (Salix alba) was commonly used for its pain relieving benefits and which we now know contains the active constituent salicin. In the human body salicin is first converted into saligen and then into salicylic acid, and from this model pharmacists discovered how to synthesize acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), the chemical we know today as aspirin.
Willow bark works to reduce pain by blocking the production of inflammatory prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances involved in inflammation and muscle contraction. Being all natural, willow bark causes significantly fewer side effects than pharmaceutical aspirin and remains in the blood stream for a longer period of time.

White Willow Bark Extract should not be used for the prevention of heart disease, migraines, or strokes because it presently has not been proven to inhibit platelet-activating factors.
Research also shows that low levels of salicylates in the blood actually increase uric acid concentrations, whereas high levels of salicylates in the blood lower the uric acid level.

White Willow Bark Extract has a large margin of safety, particularly for adults. However, accidental overdoses can occur. If such an overdose is suspected, contact at once your health care practitioner, a poison control center or the emergency department of a hospital.
Children under the age of 16 should not take this medication.In particular, children who have or are recovering from chicken pox or the flu should not use this medicine to treat vomiting.
SUGGESTED USAGE
Take 2 capsules as needed, up to 3 times daily (or as directed by a health care professional), preferably with food. Store in a cool dry place.
Keep all medicines out of the reach of children. A bottle of White Willow Bark Extract contains enough medicine to seriously harm a child.
Avoid excessive heat (over 104˚F).
CAUTIONS/CONTRAINDICATIONS: Consult a health practitioner before taking White Willow Bark Extract under the following conditions:
When taking other salicylates or other non-steroidal, anti-inflammatories, or if allergic to salicylates; if taking medicines for anticoagulation, diabetes or gout.
If there is a history of asthma or other allergic conditions, or if suffering from severe anemia or from gastro-intestinal bleeding, intestinal ulcers, or bleeding.
During pregnancy, or nursing, or if pain, fever or inflammation persists.

Case Studies
In 1972, Steinegger and Hovel conducted an analytical and biological study on salicin. Their comparative blood level studies show that while natural salicin may reach peak levels more slowly than ASA products, it stays active much longer. (1) Several studies have examined the effectiveness of a willow bark extract in reducing pain in people with osteoarthritis.(2-3)
The anti-inflammatory effects of white willow bark extracts were documented in a 2005 study.(4) The results of a study on the use of white willow bark extract for lower back pain were published in The American Journal of Medicine in 2000.(5)
